"The idea behind the event is to bring together international energy front-runners to solve the smart grid equation and gain a better understanding of its long term environmental benefits and far-reaching economic potential.
Smart grid means redesigning the current energy rule book – changing and upgrading physical infrastructure alone will not be sufficient and it must be accompanied by new business models, new set of regulation and interstate relations, and a full shift in the consumer behaviour.
Visionary CEOs in the energy sector will need to understand that new business models will have to focus on services instead of kilowatt hours. There is still some ways to go, as for instance current regulation of DSOs is focused on providing owners and operators with the incentives to improve cost efficiency by reducing operation costs rather than upgrading grids towards a smarter system. In the future energy networks, the principles that have guided the industry for over 100 year will become obsolete, where the centralized and rigid network as we know it today will no longer exist. It will become an agile and adaptable web of interactions which will be highly responsive to fluctuations in availability and demand. As a result, a dynamic pricing system and a market for ”using” the network at DSO-level will evolve – DSOs will set the framework, standards and rules for the market. The danger is to try to create this new environment through a technology fix without understanding and engaging with the customer.
The approach to the customer should mimic that of other commercial sectors - electricity users are not demanding kilowatt hours – they are demanding service, such as transport, heating and cooling light, entertainment.. Here the value of information on the behavior of end users will increase. The Smart grid model has an important role to play here"
Anders Stouge, Deputy Director General, Danish Energy Association
